Sudarisman was born in 1948, in Yogyakarta, Central
Java, and graduated from the Arts Academy there. He also studied at an
arts academy in Holland where he learned about Western art and where
he was taught not to depict realism in his work.
The abstract symbols in his works show us the power of technology and its influence on mankind. On the other hand, Sudarisman has a lot of respect for his traditional society, especially the traditional craftsmen and artists and he loves to represent them in his work.
The colours Sudarisman uses are very characteristic of him, with warm colours always present. The warm yellows and oranges tend to come forward, making the cold colours recede. This is his way of creating space in his paintings, which are one-dimensional, like flat wayang puppets.
